Kyoto’s amazing hidden gems [Top 6]

There are still plenty of hidden gems in Japan that haven’t received much spotlight yet. In this article, I’ll share some lesser-known spots in Kyoto, one of the country’s most popular travel destinations, based on my own experiences!

6: Nashinoki Shrine [Kyoto city]

Nashinoki Shrine is a mystical spot quietly nestled on the north side of central Kyoto, right next to the Kyoto Imperial Palace.

Beloved by locals, the shrine has an enchanting atmosphere that feels as if you’ve stepped into the world of an anime or manga. Even during the day, the area remains tranquil—you can hear the gentle flow of a clear stream and soak in the timeless charm of old Kyoto.

Nearby, you’ll also find a stylish modern-Japanese café, making it a perfect place to take a break while exploring the city.

5 Ine cho Town[Yoza distinct]

Located a bit away from Kyoto City, the coastal town of Ine faces the Sea of Japan and offers a nostalgic glimpse of traditional Japanese scenery. The town is famous for its funaya—traditional boathouses that line the waterfront—an architectural style that is rarely seen anywhere else in the world.

Visitors can take a sightseeing boat to admire the town from the water while feeding seagulls, or enjoy a stylish open-window café and explore sake breweries that have been producing traditional Japanese sake for generations. Nearby, you’ll also find Amanohashidate, one of Japan’s most beloved natural landscapes, which makes a perfect pairing for your trip. For those who want to experience a different side of Kyoto beyond the city, Ine is highly recommended.

4.Matsuo shrine[Arashiyama area]

Matsuo Taisha Shrine is located about a 30-minute walk from Arashiyama, one of Kyoto’s most famous sightseeing areas. If you’re coming by train, it’s just one stop before Arashiyama.

Among Kyoto’s many shrines, this one stands out for its impressive scale and unique atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy colorful wind chimes, a mystical torii gate standing quietly against the mountainside, and a waterfall flowing with clear, refreshing water.

At the shrine’s shop, you can even try your hand at a small game with bows to win charms as souvenirs. A visit here offers plenty of opportunities to capture the quintessential scenes of Japan you’ve been looking for.

3.Atago Nenbutsu-ji Temple [Arashiyama area]

Atago Nenbutsu-ji Temple is a hidden gem tucked away in the mountains, about a 15-minute bus ride from Arashiyama. The highlight of this temple is the collection of around 1,200 unique stone statues of Jizo, each with its own charming expression. Many of them are covered in moss, blending beautifully with the fresh mountain air and creating a serene atmosphere that embodies the spirit of Zen.

Since it’s usually quiet with few visitors, it’s a perfect side trip from Arashiyama. Just keep in mind that buses only run a few times a day—be sure to check the return schedule beforehand, or you might end up spending the night in the middle of the mountains with nothing around 😿.

2.Fushimi Inari Shrine – night version – [Kyoto city]

The thousand torii gates of Fushimi Inari Taisha are surely among the Kyoto sights you’re most excited to see. But did you know this shrine is open 24 hours a day? While it’s packed with tourists during the daytime, visiting at night reveals a completely different side—a calm, mystical atmosphere. The glowing orange gates illuminated in the darkness look straight out of the world of Naruto. Walking through the torii under the night sky is an unforgettable experience, and one you can safely enjoy thanks to Japan’s reputation for security.

Just remember, the area around the shrine is a residential neighborhood, so please be mindful not to make loud noises during your night visit.
