Shimanami kaido is a beautiful cycling road connecting Hiroshima with Ehime.
Along the road, you can visit many unique Setouchi islands.
On 15~16/09/2025, we had a trip here for camping & cycling.
Let’s follow our experience and get information for your travel!
Yes, due to oversleeping, we arrived shimanami kaido in the evening🤣
Today’s camping site was Marine youth center in Mukaishima ( the first island of Shimanami kaido).
One camping site cost only 3,140 Japanese yen.
There were still enough place in our site even put two tents.
You can see great view from in front of the tent.
Of course, My puppy was in the car, he don’t ride on a bicycle haha.
At 8 am, we started cycling from the camping site. Feeling warm wind and watching beautiful sea, we suddenly found some mysterious statues:
wow, pretty small moai stood in a garden. You can take pictures of him.
what a tall King Kong! It was approximately 5m tall. Amazing!
After passed the first bridge, we arrived the second island, Innnoshima.
We visited Innoshima Navy Castle first.
Here was the castle of Myrakami Kaizoku (Kaizoku means pirates), and you can learn history of Murakami navy. Murakami Kaizoku ruled this area in Japan’s Samurai era. They were rare Samurais because they fought from battleships like pirates.
On the road, the upward slope was very tiring, but this place is worth traveling.
After here, Oyama shrine is also recommend place.
This shrine’s another name is “shrine for bicycle”, you can visit here and pray for safety of your cycling travel. There is also a unique big wood stump which is regarded as god for stock (because the pronunciations of stock and wood stump are same in Japanese🤫)
Yes, this island is not 3rd island actually, I skipped two islands because I couldn’t find any interesting
hidden gems there, but still beautiful islands haha 😂.
Anyway, Omishima Island was the best. Once you come here, you must visit Oyamazumi shrine and other
related spots.
Ikkino-gomon is my most favorite spot of this travel.
The tree has been standing here for more than 3,000 years!
You can walk under the tree and get spiritual power from here.
Also, the statue of Tsuruhime is very recommended to visit.
She was the princess Samurai of these islands.
Although she is woman, she wore Samurai sword and fought against enemies.
She died when she was 21 years old, you can imagine her life by watching this statue.
Our last stop was Oshima island. We watched beautiful amazing sunset from white beach near the bridge to shikoku.
Thank you for watching!
